On April 5, 2018, the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Chicago Bulls organization announced Antonio Blakeney as the 2017-18 G League Rookie of the Year. Playing for Chicago’s developmental NBA team affiliate Windy City Bulls, Blakeney averaged 6.6 boards, 3.9 assists, and a league-high 32.0 points in 32 games.

Selected by the 26 general managers and head coaches of the NBA’s developmental league, the NBA G League Rookie of the Year award honors the first-year player who made the most significant impact to help his team during the season. Standing 6’ 6” and weighing 197 pounds, the 21-year-old guard signed with the Chicago Bulls in July 2017.

While playing for the Bulls in the 2017 NBA Summer League, Blakeney shot just shy of 50 percent from the hardwood and contributed 86.2 percent from the charity stripe. Undrafted, the LSU alumnus recorded his rookie season high of 46 points against the Maine Red Claws on December 6, 2017.

Having played 19 games with the Chicago Bulls, Blakeney averaged 7.9 points, 1.7 boards, and 1.1 assists.

The NBA trade deadline was February 8, but the Bulls were busy a week earlier as the team dealt forward Nikola Mirotic and a second-round draft pick to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for center Omer Asik, guards Tony Allen and Jameer Nelson, and a first-round pick. After missing the first 23 games of the 2017-18 season due to broken bones in his face, Mirotic averaged 16.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 25 games for the Bulls.

Asik, meanwhile, made his NBA debut with the Bulls back in 2010, but signed as a free agent with the Houston Rockets in 2012 and was traded to New Orleans two years later. He has struggled to stay healthy in recent years and has yet to play for the Bulls since the trade. Allen was placed on waivers by the Bulls one week after the trade, while Nelson was dealt to the Detroit Pistons for Willie Reed and a 2022 second-round pick. The key to the deal for Chicago was the first-round pick, which it plans to use to continue the rebuilding process it began when it dealt Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
